The Triumph Hurdle is the opening race of Gold Cup day and the Spring Hurdle seem to be a popular proving ground with 5 of the last 10 winners having placed or won this event the previous month at Leopardstown. No one trainer has won this race more than twice in the last 10 years and Gordon Elliott certainly won’t be making it 3 this year. Hendersons’ 2019 win with Pentland Hills was his second but only because Goshen threw the race away.

The Fulke Walwyn Kim Muir Challenge Cup Amateur Riders Handicap Chase was formerly run on day two but was moved to day 3 in 2009 and is now run on the new course from its original running on the old course. In each of the previous 5 years of its running Willie Mullins has trained the winner. Two of the previous winners have also won the Solerina Mares Novice Hurdle at Fairyhouse which is run over the slightly greater distance of 2m 2f.

The Brown Advisory & Merriebelle Stable Plate Handicap Chase is a bit of a mouthful but for this year Paddy Power has taken over the sponsorship. The first running of this race in 1951 ended in a dead heat and as far as I can discern is the only dead heat at the festival. Perhaps someone can put this right if not. It would be a great pub quiz question if it is!
